Space Engine

Space Engine is a space simulation program that lets you explore the universe. More info and free download here: http://en.spaceengine.org

If you like the space and always wanted to explore it this is a good game. You can land in most of the planets, stars and moons, don't expect big graphics. Obviously is not 100% accurate, but hey it's still cool.

To be honest i had a bad time with the controls at first, until somehow it fixed or i pressed something by accident and now i can go wherever i want freely.

Anyway, here goes some screenshots from my exploration:

My first one, by then didn't know how to move the camera correctly or the time settings. Saturn:




My second screenshot, somehow i stood against a star and didn't know how to to get  out of it. It's not the Sun, somewhere else in our galaxy.




Once i started to get used to the controls, things went better and smoothly.

Perhaps i took too many screenshots, but couldn't stop, this game is so pretty and i love exploration. Also some of them are good wallpapers for use on the background.

I remember playing Elite: Frontier for the same reasons... not as beautiful, of course, but was good for the time.

It's just exploration, there's nothing more. Actually i'm not sure if simulators are cataloged as "games" or simple as a program/software.

Yup, I'm aware.
Frontier had a bad gameplay so I mostly used it for jumping around from planet/system to planet/system.

Still at ~50% downloaded...

50% already is not bad at all! It took me around 3-4 hours to download.

I hope you can run it, so we could exchange screenshots.

"Searching..." For something called PAK files for ages now... I'm assuming it has hang...

Already tried assigning it to the ATI (I'm on a dual graphics laptop), recent drivers, etc.
After reading the log, I've removed it and now I'm reinstalling to a different location. Let's see...

OK... went a little further now... Still crashes, but now when I click on the Planetarium option... :'(

Apparently there's a lot of video cards not compatible.

That's a pity.

Yup, that was what I was afraid.
According to Dell, I have the latest ATI driver *but* acording to ATI (now AMD), I don't, so I'm downloading it now. Maybe it'll solve the issue (and won't create others... )

No kidding...

Many people had issues with the video card requirement. It's a pity you can't enjoy it either.

I will post more screenshots, so at least you will see the best things i found there.

It's pretty cool to see the night on Earth, they show up the lights.

Yup. It's quite detailed.
I'll bet it's even awesome if we install those extra textures I see in the site, but they are freaking big...

They are not worth it, the differences are minimal.

Did you check the ships? I still didn't find any i like.

Checked a couple but I prefer without.

I had the same reaction as you Michi xD To make it worse it's called "Firedragonfly".

There are some normal ships, like the ones NASA sent out to space and a plane. The rest look like satellites.

Today I told my boss about this, she was really intrigued about this and might try the game out.
Too bad it doesn't run on my laptop, but I will try on the PC downstairs sometime.

By pressing F9 you can record videos, i made one of a black hole. I got bad timing at getting at it, the hole starts appearing around minute 2:20
